Energy Storage- The New Power Supply House

A UK based company, Highview Power Storage, has introduced its Liquid Air Energy Storage technology. In 2014 the UK Government Department of Energy and Climate Change awarded them approximately $11.6m grant to build a plant which is designed to convert low-grade waste heat from the onsite landfill gas engines into electrical power. It was assumed that this system will be cost effective, clean and will bear no environmental impact. It has integrated storage energy technology by using cheap, off peak energy to cool air using a conventional industrial refrigeration plant. The technology comprises of three basic principles of Liquid Air Energy Storage which is: a charging system, energy store; and a power recovery. When it’s charging at off-peak or has excess electricity it is used to power an air liquefier, which produces liquid air. Then the liquid is stored in a tank at low pressure. When the power needs to be recovered, the liquid air is pumped to high pressure, evaporated and heated. The high pressure gas drives a turbine to generate electricity. When heat is added gas is released which makes the process more efficient.   According to Highview liquid air energy storage has advantages over other storage technologies since it does not require the same material as the lithium that batteries need. The material that is used in the industrial refrigeration plant is stainless steel. The advantages of Liquid Air Energy Storage is predominantly due to no geographical constraints, low capital cost, long lifetime of over 25 years, scaleable to 100MWs/GWhs, mature components available for a global supply chain, integration of industrial low-grade waste heat and waste cold, uses no scare or toxic materials.

Highpower International Inc. is a company which engages in providing clean energy storage and manufactures lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Their products are being used in various electronic products such as solar energy storage systems, backup power systems as well as electric vehicles.

 

General Electric is one of the leading energy sector where is always thinking of the future of Energy Storage. The management and control team of energy supply and usage is always surveying new ways for the search for new, more cost-effective energy storage solutions. These systems main purpose is to store energy for use on demand. The United States is the leader in providing these services to develop and developing countries. There are various types of storage systems: solid state batteries, flow batteries, thermal and hydro, but batteries have become the company’s main business target. The US Government has taken an interest in ensuring that utilities companies are addressing energy storage and offers $4.5 billion in loan grantees for these companies to develop innovative energy solutions.   GE’s energy storage solutions are currently present in 25 countries where it has the capabilities of producing over 50 megawatt hours of grid storage. In 2015 to increase its business model GE has announced a spinoff of energy storage, solar and electric vehicles into a startup called Current. Another company by the name of Southern California Edison believes that supply from batteries is ready to compete against gas-fired peaker plants. One of the largest power grids, PJM Interconnection LLC, believes that lithium-ion batteries are already competitive with gas when it is needed short term. The battery storage systems have three basic parts: the DC battery that stores the energy, the AC power conversion that converts the energy from AC to DC and a control system that manages the operation of the storage system.

With the technology always changing companies are forever dipping into diversifying its business model. Tesla Motors, In., one of the leading electric cars maker in 2015 announced that it has produced solar-rechargeable, whole-house electric battery. Tesla is one company that its aim is to develop green technology. Tesla introduced its first electric car of which one of the advantages of driving an electric car is that if you forget to power the battery and leave it to drain completely the car will lock, all the wheels lock and the car won’t move again without a new replacement battery of approximately $30,000. To resolve this problem it partnered with Panasonic to manufacture the lithium-ion cells for their electric vehicles.  Tesla Motors is also planning to enter the market of creating solar roofs that will be integrated with battery storage collected from the rooftop solar panels. Mercedez Benz is another company who is also planning to offer its consumers a garage-mounted battery pack to store energy collected from rooftop solar panels.

    “Energy Storage: The New power Supply House”, by Alessandro Ragusa started off as a very slow topic, and at first I honestly thought I was going to be confused and bored with this topic but as time went on I found myself completely intrigued by this innovation. Storing energy is something we really need to consider for future generations. The idea of using all our fossil fuel and possible destroying our atmosphere is frightening and extremely selfish when our generation could possibly have a answer to saving our planet.

    The article starts out with the storage of gas that will ultimately be turned into electric energy from landfills. Through a series of procedures the landfill gas when heated and cooled can produce a liquid air and it can be saved and used for electric energy. This is being worked on in the United Kingdom and companies are using this type of energy for learning how to store solar energy, energy for cars and with low cost and no toxic materials it could be an option for our storage questions.

    in the first video that is attached to this article it is a TED video and the topic is “How to reach Global Sustainability via Energy Efficiency in Industry” this video explains how industry needs to accept innovation and be part of the global movement to become a more efficient energy planet. The problem is that the companies that say they are working on these techniques only fund the lab work but aren’t incorporating the innovation to their actual production. Just think if all companies in the world made an effort to become energy efficient even by just ten percent we could really make an impact.

    Here in the United States the company General Electric is making strides and a video was incorporated in the article that displayed some of their newer inventions. I feel like the future is here, as a child my parents took us to Disney world and I remember going to Epcot and going on the ride in the big globe. The stuff that they talked about on that ride is happening today. I think the technology is here it just isn’t accessible to all of us.

    The most interesting part of this article was the presentation video from Telsa and Solar City. I remember reading in an earlier current event that these two companies were going to join forces to have a solar powered house. The main point of the video was how solar power can be not only efficient; it can have curb appeal and protect the environment. . When you think about solar panels the first thing that comes to mind is the ugly big panel that are on the tops of roofs. No longer, now these two companies have come up with panels that are glass and they actually look like roof tile. They are attractive, they last longer than regular roof tiles and they are efficient. The use of these tiles and the power source system they have can make a house completely dependent on solar energy. If a whole neighbor did this, it would be amazing. After seeing this video I would not hesitate on getting this technology but the one thing the video did not discuss is price and I am sure there is a big price tag that comes along with this innovation. All and all the future is bright, one day the theory of supply and demand will come true and there will be competitors that have the same innovation and at that point we all might be able to afford this.

    Again there is a pus forward in the way of energy and how it can be created. Power storage is something that troubles the masses. I recall back to a new jersey being ravaged by super storm Sandy. Aware that the storm would be particularly devastating just days before its arrival, it would seem everyone and their mother had the similar idea to go out and purchase a generator. These generators, for the approximate two weeks without power that many people faced, lead to a similar spike in demand in gasoline. If the problem you had was not that you could not find a generator, your problem was that you had run out of gasoline and could not buy anymore because stations had to portion their supply. Where I lived, this meant they could not sell to you if your last name did not begin with one of the designated letters of that day that could purchase gasoline.
    One of the largest issues with the generator what that the emissions it let off from burning gasoline had to be emitted outside of the house. I remember the night of the storm, my father and I went outside in the torrential rain to start a sopping wet generator in fierce winds. In a word, it was inconvenient.
    If this let one truth be evident, it was that man could still be thrown on his knees by mother nature. As a society, I feel it is an unspoken rule that we are to dominate that relationship. we already take away the challenge of a hunt by mass produce the slaughter of animals for meat, hide in sturdy homes to avoid her environmental ailments, and operate speedy vehicles to break down the walls she built with her expansive nature. What remains is her ability to briefly take it away by knocking away our precious electricity that we rob of her and store for our use. This would seem to be the solution.
    With the ability to create power, and with it electricity, from oxygen, man gets another foot up. I might project that this technology could find itself more easily in the common home rather than a large plant and doled out to those who pay. The technology seems simple enough that it might just be installed in a home as a onetime cost and used to generate electricity for a home not unlike solar panels. By using a very common element to generate substantial, easily stored energy, this technology could eliminate the need for electrical wires.
    While this technology may be kept away from homes at first, I do not doubt, if a better method is not found, these will be common place in the house hold. Not unlike a modern boiler, but perhaps a bit less loud, the pressure generator would be a staple in homes of tomorrow and must buy for the existing houses of today. Energy from the comfort of one’s home and the elimination of gasoline use in a confined space of living will do all men and women of the close future very well.

    Every time I search this blog to find topics to write my thoughts out I find myself learning about something new. I knew of Energy Storage, which is to say I knew it existed, but beyond that I did not know much. Upon reading more about Energy Storage I must say I am impressed. Energy storage seems like one of those things that always existed but you never really know how cool it is until you actually read about it. Electricity is amazing. It powers all of our technology and harnessing its power even in the limited sense that we have has increased our standard of living to an impressive degree. However, as great as electricity is, it is volatile. That means that storing it away only to be used later is not feasible. At least not in any long term, fiscally responsible way. This was the case up until the creation of energy storage.

    Being able to store electrical energy and use it whenever someone wishes to would be an incredible technological move forward. In addition to energy storage allowing for a more balanced form of energy redistribution, energy storage also allows for the further creation of renewable energy technology which was, up until the creation of energy storage, had a much more limited function. In addition, energy storage can allow for a better balance between power generation and load. Energy storage basically allows for a far superior method of building power supplies. This technology is potentially revolutionary.

    The first video is a TED Talk describing the technology and giving a strong argument for why various industry needs to accept innovation as being the propeller for a clean and energy efficient world. The video is good, if a bit long winded. I believe it makes the case for a practical application of this technology alongside many others. Honestly, I do not think this kind of topic really needs a TED Talk at all. How much of a luddite does one have to be to see the potential for this kind of technology and reject it? Afraid of losing your job? So were garment makers in the 1860’s. It did not happen then and it will not happen now. This kind of technology is ground breaking and needs to embraced and researched as much as is feasibly possible and fiscally responsible.

    There is another video by general electric that covers similar ground as the TED Talk. They speak about this technology and why it is important that they research this and the positives it will have on the world. The video is formatted differently than the TED Talk. TED Talk are basically PowerPoint Presentation come to life. This video was not like that. General Electric’s video is a really standard generic we are the future type video. It is not bad, but is not really informational either. The video was basically an advertisement for the company. It’s a good ad that does a decent job introducing us to the topic of research.

    The last group of videos was by Tesla motors. Honestly, out of all the video mentioned this one id probably my favorite. They are more informational like the TED Talk but it does not bore quite as much. Also the videos are a live action demonstration of their technology and why it is so cool. They takes the best parts of both videos and gets me excited for the technology more than the other two videos mentioned.

    In short, this is groundbreaking technology. It is the kind of advancements we need to be making if we want to account for our growing population. I, personally, cannot wait to see this technology integrated further into our lives looking forward. It is nowhere but up from here provided we keep the funding coming for amazing projects like this.

    Speakers feature on Ted Talks always have a very effective way with relaying a message. In relatively short videos, there is an endless range of topics done by the most engaging speakers in the world. The guest speaker presented on the featured Ted Talk, Stijn Santen, defined the word ‘sustainability’ in a way that I would have never really considered. He defined it as “Meeting the needs of the present, without compromising the needs of the future generations.” The challenge of global sustainability lies in, how we can use energy effectively, knowing that resources are finite and that the necessity for these resources are growing. So energy efficiency is the most important thing to consider when trying to deal with this challenge. So this talk is basically about the change that’d be necessary in order to maximize potential energy efficiency with in our society. For one, there is a lack of funding in the labs able to figure out solutions to some of these problems. The problem isn’t with the funding of the research, the problem is with getting the research out of the lab and into the mass market. I like his statement on “the valley of death”.
    I thought that the LAES (liquid air energy storage) is an efficient energy reserve. It just uses liquid air to create energy reserve that can deliver a large scale, long duration energy storage. LAES is better in the sense that it does not have any geographical restrictions like other energy storage solutions.
    There are many effective sources of energy, but the circumstances necessary to fulfill to use them are the problems we are facing. Solar Power is a great source of renewable energy. It’s the most powerful source of energy. More energy falls as sunlight on the United States in a single day than it uses in a year. There are many reasons why solar power isn’t the primary source of energy now. Cost and reliability are some primary reasons. Solar power is expensive compared to any other and scientist are still trying to figure out how to make it reliable by storing solar power. Without storing power, the availability of solar power varies with respect to time, weather, season and location. These energy sources may be pricey when it comes to research and production but I strongly feel that these are measure that may be necessary to take. We need an opportunity to create a sustainable connection with the planet. Eco imagination is actually a beautiful idea that might solve some of these problems. They are known for their idea of the solar roadways, making transportation more energy efficient and more friendly to the environment. It is GE’s (General Electric) growth strategy to enhance the productivity of resources and to reduce the environmental impact of the resources at a global scale. The means of doing so would be through commercial solutions for customers and through their own operations. They are developing solutions to enhance economic growth while avoiding emissions and reducing water consumption.

    Unlike some of my classmates, being a member of the Honors Leadership Program at Seton Hall, the topic of technology innovations are always brought up. So hearing about the “Energy Storage: The New power Supply House”, by Alessandro Raguse it was a very familiar and important topic to discuss. Just recently, the Program had a meeting with a futurist named Frank Diana, who enlightened us about all the new technology trends we are anticipating and a couple of the issues with the direction we are heading, which is toward a world of renewable energy. Since everything is going electronic basically, from cars, to homes, to businesses, to our everyday activities, the biggest issue we will have is the storage. With this unfathomable amount of energy entering our society in the next 5 to 10 years, where and how are we going to be able to place the surplus of energy we generate by utilizing the planet’s resources like wind, water, sun light, etc. This is where Alessandro jumps in to help explain it to his audience.

    The first thing he goes into in his article is how the United Kingdom is working toward mastering the processes of storing landfill gas and converting that energy into useful means of power for vehicles, homes, etc. This will be a low cost and safe, non-toxic, way to power vehicles without the repercussions by coal fuels, like we use today. Additionally, the UK is using these procedures to help learning more about the storage of solar energy, which is the most abundant form of natural energy.

    Alessandro then goes on to introducing a TED video, “How to read Global Sustainability via Energy Efficiency”, which illustrates the importance to accept these energy innovations and join the global movement to preserve and better the planet we life on. I couldn’t agree more with the message of this TED video because in order to make a true difference the whole world must be a part of this movement, ensuring that the hurtful ways in which we conduct energy now are forgotten for the better. Furthermore, the first step to this process is to have big name companies convert to clean energy and start a trend and be a paragon for the rightful way to conduct a business. Just like in high school, by using the popular of the few may convince and guarantee the participation of the majority.

    One of the last points mentioned in this article was that progress an United States company, General Electric, is making to us this new technologies on their business front. Companies with repetitions such as General Electric are imperative to ensure the word is spread to other corporations and serve as an example to the general public that the way of the future is clean and improved energy. To allow this progressive methodology to continue the storage of this energy must be invested in, which is what these big name companies would be advertising. Without the help of the most influential companies and countries around the world the new age of technology will be possible, however there is a chance, without the recognition, that our potential as a society will be stopped by our own hand. So to reiterate, technology is already being created to better the world we live in so to make sure we can use those new innovations storage facilities must be invented.
